I had the opportunity to work with three young men (Raymond, Rakeem and Eric) in the Summer Youth Program. The focus of our work was weeding, pruning, mowing and general cleanup of the church grounds.
Identifying poison ivy was an essential first lesson for this hands-on program. We concentrated on weeding all the planting beds and a mowing strip around the tombstones.
Cleaning the front walkway and the rear patio was another important aspect of the project. All the planting beds and the bases of the tombstones were mulched with wood chips. Free wood chips are available in Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick. The price was right.
Our workers preferred heavy lifting to detail work. Carrying bricks from the basement and moving historic building stones left over from the breezeway construction were good projects for them.
