With hands clapping, heads nodding, and bodies swaying just a little, the audience for our May 13th recital thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful playing of Phoenix Rising, a Latin jazz ensemble. Led by flutist Andrea Brachfeld, the group played in a number of Latin styles, in this case infused with American blues harmonies and improvised solos, but also with some Yoruban and Hebrew chants.
The program was made up entirely of compositions by Brachfeld, who brought them to life with colleagues Chembo Corniel on congas, Diego Lopez on drums, Andrew Eulau on bass, and Mr. Heinine on piano. When Andrea Brachfeld invited the audience to dance, a couple of people responded on their feet, but more were very likely dancing in their imaginations.
The music was beautiful and the array of soups that followed were delicious. Thanks to the folks who helped through the entire spring series to provide food, and special thanks to those who prepared and served and cleaned up: Ethel Salamone, Joan Fekete, Erie Beemsterboer, Ellen Hamilton, and Margaret Coakley. You’re keeping the Lunchtime in the Downtown Lunchtime Recital Series!
Mark your calendars for the fall recitals: Sep 23rd, Oct 14th, Oct 28th, and Nov 11th.
