Town Clock Community Development Corporation Update

The progress with the re-design project of our Town Clock Community Development Corporation has moved a bit slower this month. There were several meetings, but they were more of internal importance. We received support from the real estate developers: Bergen County’s United Way together with the Madeline Corporation, allowing us to move forward with architectural plans. And we narrowed our program provider pool to Women Aware. Their statistics proved that there were enough single women domestic violence victims in the year of 2011 to fill six efficiency apartments. Finally, Pastor Susan is supervising Jaime Johnson, a student at the Rutgers School of Social Work. His focus is on the development of nonprofit boards. Continue reading

Another Volunteer Day with Rutgers Students

It is just so contagious when young people take the initiative and come and volunteer at an old church like ours! And so it happened again on Saturday, October 23, under the leadership of Christine José when she brought 15 students to the church. They planted containers, weeded and pruned the front of the church, and built a curb to the sanctuary’s back patio where rainstorms had caused miniature mud slides in the past. Continue reading

Finally, the Sexton’s House!

It is a miracle that our denomination still has a person like Paul Nulton to help churches like ours that are at times hard pressed with maintenance issues. Paul has been a guest for years in our midst, and we are blessed to have him.

Now, he is tackling the Sexton’s House. He started in September, but when hurricane Irene hit, many churches needed his emergency assistance – and so did our retreat center in Warwick, where Paul has his office. However, Paul keeps coming back faithfully.

This time he is painting the exterior of the Sexton’s House. Our architect, Margaret Westfield, provided the specifications as a gift to the church. Since then, Paul has been applying Victorian colors to the house!

We also want to thank Jaime Johnson, the new chair of our Invitation & Outreach Committee, because he, too, has been diligently involved with scraping and painting the house – besides his volunteering for “House of Manna” on many days.

Enjoy the picture of Jaime and Paul with Robert Longo, our sexton. They all are part of our family here at First Reformed Church. Continue reading

Rutgers Scarlet Service Day a Boon to the Church

It was a wonderful workday when, on Saturday, September 17 , twenty-two Rutgers th students and their leader came to our church in order to help with our property maintenance. Finally, long delayed projects had a serious chance to be accomplished. The students were part of a work force of 450, all engaged in various service projects in the community. Continue reading

The Work Must Go On

MPG’s work on the front of the church ended in May when D.D.S., another one of our contractors, intensified its efforts of soffit painting in the same location. But how could they accomplish this with the scaffold of the previous contractor down? The solution was a rented lift. Continue reading

Work With Meaning

One of the great blessings of our church is the Work Days. Really, I mean it! Of course, there are sweat and toil and labor. But there are also fellowship, laughter, and sometimes engaged discussion. Finally, look at the outcome: it was a Work Day that added considerably to our church’s assets —this time to the Randolph Room Entryway. On Jun 25th, Paul and Caryn Aran tiled its entrance and even put in a little mosaic. Earlier, Scott Lyon had rewired the room, installed a nice chandelier and an outside flood light with timer and motion detector. Now anybody can attend functions in the Randolph Room, even if the glass door entrance is locked, or when access through Fellowship Hall is not opportune. Continue reading
